Gianfranco Vinay is a writer, essayist, musicologist, and music critic. He was professor of History of Music at the ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ Conservatory in Turin and maître de conférences at Paris 8 University Music Department. He was Head of the didactic sector of the Italian Society of Musicology. During his career, he has combined musicological research with artistic activity in the field of visual arts.
He has published numerous studies mainly on 20th-century music, including Charles Ives (1974) and Stravinsky neoclassico (1987), L’invenzione della memoria nel ‘900 musicale (Marsilio, 1987), Il Novecento nell’Europa Orientale e negli Stati Uniti (EDT 1991). Since the beginning of the second millennium, he has published books in French on Charles Ives et l’utopie sonore américaine (Michael de Maule 2001), and on Quaderno di Strada de Salvatore Sciarrino (Michael de Maule 2007).
