The nature of the instrument: Luciano Berio, instrumental thought and Schaefferian theory

English: Examines the relationships between Luciano Berio’s musical language and the nature of instruments from the perspective of Pierre Schaeffer’s theories. The status of the instrument and how its role in creating musical language has been ignored is discussed. Berio’s relationship with the electroacoustic medium is described; this leads to a discussion of the instrument and the electroacoustic medium, particularly from the viewpoint of the French Groupe de Recherches Musicales. A survey of Schaeffer’s reassessment of the instrumental concept is followed by a short discussion of the virtuoso and by a description of the main elements of Schaeffer’s instrumental analysis. Berio’s Sequenza V for trombone solo is briefly analyzed according to Schaefferian theories.
