Role of the intellectual and the musician between the Revolution and the Restoration

An examination of 18th- and 19th-c. philosophy tends to underline the contradictions between the cosmopolitanism of the Enlightenment, and Romantic nationalism and individualism. The figure of the Italian operatic composer is placed and analyzed in this framework, with particular attention to the cultural role of Verdi and Rossini.
