The relationship between bio-acoustic and socio-acoustic habitats is explored within the context of soundscape studies, including the work of the World Soundscape Project, Bernie Krause, David Monacchi and the author. The possible contributions of musicians to acoustic sustainability are explored, along with the emerging practice of soundscape composition on the part of field recordists, composers and sound artists treating environment as music. Criteria for studying and evaluating acoustic communities and their soundscapes are presented.
