HISTORY

The first series of the Journal of Musicological Studies of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana was inaugurated in 1939 with the publication of the volume Antonio Vivaldi. Note e documenti sulla vita e sulle opere, realised on the occasion of the first edition of the festival “Settimana Musicale Senese” dedicated to Antonio Vivaldi. The main thread of the first series of Chigiana was to conjugate concert planning with musicological research, contributing thus to the rediscovery, valorisation and concert performance of many “forgotten” compositions, particularly by seventeenth- and eighteenth- century Italian composers.

The second series (vol.1 is no. 21 in the continuous series) was initiated in 1964, when Olschki in Florence took over the publication of the journal. The majority of volumes are the result of the conference activities of the Accademia, which had started gaining international recognition.

The third series (vol. 1 is no. 49 in the continuous series) is inaugurated in 2019, on the occasion of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the “Settimana Musicale Senese”; it is now published by LIM, Lucca.
