Julia Freund

Julia Freund studied musicology and philosophy in Freiburg, Bristol and Munich. From 2014 to 2017 she was visiting research assistant at the University of Leeds. She received her doctorate in 2017 at LMU Munich. Her doctoral dissertation was published by Wilhelm Fink Verlag in 2020 under the title Fortschrittsdenken in der Neuen Musik. Konzepte und Debatten in der frühen Bundesrepublik (Progressive Thought in New Music. Concepts and Debates in the Early Federal Republic of Germany). Since 2018 Julia has been a post-doctoral researcher in the international research cluster “Writing Music. Iconic, performative, operative, and material aspects in musical notation(s)”, where she focusses on Sylvano Bussotti’s graphic scores. In2019 she was appointed Wissenschaftliche Assistentin at the Institute for Musicology and Music Pedagogy at JLU Giessen. Her research interests include music histories of the 19th–21st centuries, music aesthetics, theory of notation and music historiography.
Julia Freund ha studiato musicologia e filosofia a Friburgo, Bristol e Monaco. Dal 2014 al 2017 è stata visiting research assistant all’University of Leeds. Ha conseguito il Dottorato di ricerca nel 2017 alla LMU di Monaco e la sua tesi dottorale è stata pubblicata dalla casa editrice Wilhelm Fink nel 2020 con il titolo Fortschrittsdenken in der Neuen Musik. Konzepte und Debatten in der frühen Bundesrepublik (Pensiero progressivo nella nuova musica. Concetti e dibattiti nella giovane Repubblica Federale Tedesca).
Dal 2018, Julia Freund è ricercatrice post-doc nel progetto di ricerca “Writing Music. Iconic, performative, operative, and material aspects in musical notation(s)”, nell’ambito del quale si occupa dello studio delle partiture grafiche di Sylvano Bussotti. Dal 2019, lavora come Wissenschaftliche Assistentin all’Istituto di Musicologia e Pedagogia musicale della JLU Giessen. I suoi interessi di ricerca investono le storie della musica dal XIX al XXI secolo, l’estetica musicale, la teoria della notazione e la storiografia musicale.
