Riccardo Malipiero’s Cassazione
From the 3rd quartet on, Malipiero’s music is marked by a contrast betweenfirmly-etched melodic configurations and sonority used for the purpose of expressing existentialist sentiments. In the symphonic work Nykteghersia, the composer combines motivic work and background sounds that have psychological implications. Similar elements occur in the Cassazione for string quartet (1967).
